Week 1: LMS

I chose Canvas as my LMS because I am able to separate my course into modules, utilize functions such as Turn It In for writing assignments, and complete all the grading within the system. Canvas also has an app which will allow my audience (teens and university students) to have access to my course on whatever device they have/prefer, wherever they choose to study (at home, at a friend's house, on public transport, etc.). Canvas also has the option of discussion boards, and allows for the integration of audio and video, both of which I intend to utilize in my course.

 

 Canvas has an integrated email and messaging system which makes it convenient for me and the students to interact without having to utilize an external communication system. The peer review feature is critical to my course because students in my course will review and assess each others' work at key intervals. Canvas also offers many different quiz options and types for me to utilize throughout the course both as a formative assessment and as a way for the students to check their own understanding. Canvas also allows me to post announcements and have them share to various other external platforms to ensure that my students don't miss important information or deadlines.

 

Canvas offers the option of integrating external apps (LTI) which I can use to integrate flashcards (which is one of the activities listed in my course IDD). I can also embed YouTube videos with course content into Canvas which will provide greater accessibility for my students without having to navigate to an external link. Canvas also allows for me to separate my course into modules which will help me organize different content areas for my students for easy navigability. And lastly, since Canvas has both peer review and assignment options, my students can submit their mini-tasks to be reviewed by each other anonymously and then submit their final assignment to the instructional team for review in the assignments area.
